Legends ofAmarna

Warning! The anathema is here.

The doctrine that poisoned the souls of many, that wrought blood against blood, life against life. Aspasia has not been the same, nor will it ever be. As history fades into legend, and legend into myth, so too are the whispers of peace that had once brought each of the races together in harmony. As such a time faded into history, so does the chaos grow - the resentment that breeds loathing - that brings about war.

With the world pitted against each other, each race, equines, canines, and felines taking sides, the question is, which side will you choose?

The Proprietor was crazy. Not like the Ha-ha you are funny kind of crazy either. More like the bat-shit crazy the fanged mare and her accompanying stallion had been. His quest sent the lion back to his second least favorite place in the land. The first being that horrendous island that changed.

Stupid Gods losing their stupid eggs.

A huff escapes the man’s chapped lips. For once he had played it smart and decided to make the trek in his human form. Wrapped tight in furs and goggles strapped firmly in place the lion man continues his climb.

The treacherous path crumbles a little more of his sanity with every step. Squeezing around a rather tight, narrow turn, Ntwa exclaims his displeasure to the world. Exclamations of disapproval and some rather colorful words litter the air around the mountain.

He was getting close to the top and every step was becoming harder to take. Muscles screamed at him to rest, to give them a small respite from the long and arduous journey they have taken. He ignores his body, pushing himself to limit and beyond.

Only when his feet reach the village does he allow himself a small break. The wind whips his furs and stings the exposed skin of his face. Lips crack and bleed. He ignores it all.

Standing on legs that wobble a little too much for his liking, the pale man makes his way through the graveyard of crumbling buildings and snow-covered debris. A crypt, he is looking for a crypt. Okay think, where does one usually find a crypt?

‘Underground dumb ass.’

No way. Really? Crypts are under the ground?

‘Yes stupid. Now can we find it so we can get out of this cold?’

Oh, right.

Eyes scan the area looking for a sign that there is a hidden crypt nearby. Searching through building after building becomes exhausting work.

Then he sees it, the most beautiful, wonderful sight he has ever seen. A church, still intact and with a roof that has not one hole in it. If the clouds were not so dark and looming Ntwa would have sworn a ray of light had descended from the heavens and lit the building up like a beacon.

‘Yep, you are delirious.’

Who cares? He had found it. Something inside him told him so.

Without knowing how, the man finds himself inside the church.

‘Well we didn’t burst into flames. Good start.’

Wait. Why would we burst into… oh. I get it. Shut up.

Legs carry him down a set of stairs that he had not seen upon arrival. A heavy metal door stands at the bottom of the stairs, posing a problem to his further advancement. A handle teased and taunted him. Surely, in place such as this, forgotten by time, the handle won’t work.

He begins to ponder how to open it. Should he throw his shoulder into it? Or perhaps shift and try that way?

‘Oh, for heaven’s sake, try the handle!’

It won’t work I am telling…

The door creaks open on rusty hinges.

‘I hate you sometimes.’

Ditto.

Stepping inside the dark corridor, Ntwa feels along the wall. Hands touch an old extinguished torch. Taking it from its nook, the man brings it close to his face. Focusing, he pulls in a deep breath and exhales a small blue flame. Luck is on his side as the torch catches fire and illuminates the room. A headache is added to the list of aches and pains in body but again, he ignores it.

He shouts, “Well now what?”

Voice reverberates around and round. And all he can do is wait.

Something is Happening...

Just as the man breathes fire into the old torch, as if by magic the metal door to the crypt slams shut, the bang echoing down the long corridors. With that a breath of cold chilly air, like the dead stirs, and from the shadows slithers a giant boa constrictor. It is easily as big around as a dinner plate, and it's tail extends even further into the darkness. It's eyes glow ice blue, and it's scales are covered in an otherworldly glow.

"Ntwadumela." The serpent hisses. "You have come for a prize worthy of the godsss. However, that prize will not come easy. You must first take a journey deep into your psyche and face your greatest fearsss." Slithering up to Ntwadumela, the snake begins twirling around the great lion, firmly wrapping him in its grasp. It is not a tight grasp, but strong enough to let the lion know that he cannot escape unless the serpent wills it. "Now, Ntwa, tell me, what is your greatest fear?"

Ntwa has made his way into the crypts and was greeted by a serpent spirit. The spirit has wrapped himself around Ntwa, and prompted him to spill his greatest fear. In order to be free and move to the next step Ntwa must comply, or else attempt to fight his way out and discover what happens if he does.

Door slams shut behind Ntwa, causing him to spin around. The resounding bang that accompanies the action sends a chill down his spine. Something ethereal hangs heavily in the air, permeating into deep into his bones.

The disconcerted feeling only escalates when a cold gust of air brushes his exposed skin. Whipping around in the direction that the breeze originated from, the lion man watches in horror as a giant boa slithers from the shadows. Its eyes glow a ghostly blue and an unearthly glow hang over its scales. His torch does little to offer him protection and the pale man drops it as he tries to escape from the creature.

It speaks, hissing out his name. Each hiss and drawn out syllable sends a spike of fear into his heart.

Snakes.

Why did it have to be snakes?

While he was not afraid of normal, healthy, little serpents, Ntwa is quickly finding out that big, hulking, eerie animals that slither are another story.

As it advances the glowing boa informs him that to claim his prize he needs to face his greatest fears.

Well screw that. He is out. Peace.

However, when the man orders his legs to move he finds they will not obey. Something seems to root him to the spot, keeping the lion turned human from escaping the approaching creature.

Panic, raw and merciless, pounds into the man, tightening his gut and speeding up his heart. Stomach does flip flops and heart flutters as the thing coils it way around him. Something tells him to fight, to struggle against the firm grip of the monster. However, logic wins the day, stilling his attempts to resist.

Breathes come in short labored gasps, not from the beast that encircles but from the terror that has hold of him. Only when he wills his heart to slow, regulates his breathing and closes his eyes, does Ntwa regain control of himself. The cool, calm mask slips back into place and the arrogant man takes center stage.

Perhaps he can lie his way out this one. Eyes reopen and with a snort of laughter, the pale one says, “My biggest fear is snakes.”

Well, it isn’t a complete fabrication of the truth. Right about now the slimy, slithery creatures are near the top of his list. Especially ones that glow and wrap around him. Oh yeah, he is going to have nightmares for weeks.

The snake must have sensed his statement as false for it squeezes him little tighter. The distress starts to creep back in. A snort and he says, “Alright, alright. My biggest fear is not having enough money.”

Another half-truth. Not quite complete but getting closer. Again, the beast tightens it hold on him. A gasp of pain echoes through the halls. Air is starting to become harder to pull into his lungs and still he resists.

To know one’s greatest fears is to have power over said person. No, he would not give the gods that kind of influence over him. A snarl of defiance and the words, “My greatest fear is my own business!” rebound off the walls.

Another gasp of pain, the air is so thin now and the man gulps for each breath. Just when thinks he is about to pass out, when the world has narrowed to a pin point, the man yells with all the might he can muster, “My greatest fear is not being able to protect those I love!”

His soul is laid bare. His greatest fear? Finding others that he loves, taking them in to be his family and losing them because he is weak. For all his perceived strength and power, Ntwa fears that he will be pathetic when his family most needs him and, because of his weakness, they will die because of him.

This is truly his greatest fear.

Something is Happening...

As the man says the words, the ghostly spirit loosens his hold on him. Slinking to the ground and fading into thin air. However, though he cannot be seen, the presence of him still lingers in the crypt, cold and cunning as his voice echoes through the chambers.

Suddenly the scene shifts, fog rising all around the lion, a frightening glow rising from it's vapors, changing the scene to a glowing blue. Now Ntwa stands on a circular post, surrounded by a chasm, perilously deep, the bottom hidden in darkness. Across from him flashes those he loves in a ghostly way on another pedestal. Just out of reach of the man. Even in his lion form he cannot jump there, it is too treacherous.

The snakes voice enters the chamber once again, hissing and ominous. "Ntwadumela. You have confessed your greatesssst fear. Now tell me who do you love most? Your family? Your friends? Or do you love yourself?

With that a hissing laugh entered the air as he spoke again. "Be careful though, you must choose truly, even if it's the less honorable option."

The serpent has shifted the chamber around Ntwa to a dark chasm and has instructed the man to choose his friends and family or himself. He must choose who he really cares about the most. Once he has chosen, the quest will move to the last, and final step. Never fear, Ntwa is near the end!
